The Honey Land Review is a Missouri based contemporary web journal dedicated
to the poetry and photography of both emerging and established artists. We
embrace work that pushes the boundaries of art and creativity and applaud risk
takers.
HLR publishes online bi-annually and welcomes submissions from across the
globe. Please see our submission section for guidelines.
What was once referred to as the "Honey Land" is the nine mile wide strip of
rural country running the length of the Iowa/Missouri border. Unclear
wording in the Missouri Constitution on boundaries combined with confusion
over the survey of the Louisiana Purchase led to The "Honey War" of 1839.
Before this bloodless territorial dispute was settled by the U.S. Supreme
Court in 1850, militias from both Iowa and Missouri squared off, a Missouri
sheriff was incarcerated and three trees containing bee hives were
ransacked.
Perhaps it was all just a classic story of risk takers pushing boundaries.
