Rafael Miguel Montes is a Cuban-American poet and Cultural Studies professor working and writing in Miami. His
work tends to explore the two worlds he seems to constantly be inhabiting--academia and Little Havana. His most
recent work has been published in Tattoo Highway, CONCLAVE: A Journal of Character, and DASH (Cal-State
Fullerton). He is married to Cuban-American poet Celia Lisset Alvarez.

I can’t believe that my wife sleeps like Billy Idol.
Sometimes, when my insomnia kicks in,
I just glance over and she’s
on stage again.

Alameda Coliseum.
“Rebel Yell” sustained outro.
It could be worse.
Meatloaf or El Debarge.
Could be better, though.
Susanna Hoffs or that chick from The Divynils.
It’s 3 in the morning and she’s all
twisted snarl and raised fist.
The brow’s gone crooked and the eyes
pinched tight.
At sunrise, she hits the snooze bar, turns,
and in a whisper,
bids Oakland goodnight.
